New to Aerial? Start Here.

Never tried aerial yoga? Most of our students hadn’t either. Here’s everything you need to know before your first class: what it is, what to wear, and what to expect.

What is aerial yoga?

Aerial yoga is traditional yoga with a soft fabric hammock hanging from the ceiling. The hammock supports part or all of your body weight. That lets you stretch deeper, take the pressure off your joints, and try inversions and backbends that would be hard to do on the floor.

Classes move between the mat and the hammock. You’ll try a posture on the ground, then again with support, so you can feel the difference. Most classes end in a floating final rest, cocooned in the fabric.

Our classes follow the Unnata® Aerial Yoga method (Unnata is Sanskrit for “elevated”). Every Unnata instructor is an experienced yoga teacher who has completed 65 hours of advanced aerial training.

Is it right for me?

Aerial Yoga is for you if…
  • You’re brand new to yoga
  • You already practice and want to go deeper
  • You’d like to try inversions and backbends with support
  • You find some postures frustrating in a regular class
  • You have a sensitive lower back, or are recovering from a minor injury [confirm]
  • You’re curious, even a little nervous

Health note: Please talk to your doctor before taking class if you have unmedicated high blood pressure, glaucoma, cataracts, arthritis in your hands or feet, a tendency toward motion sickness, or if you’re pregnant. When you book, let us know about any injuries or conditions so your instructor can offer modifications.

What to wear and bring

Wear

  • Fitted pants that cover your knees (no shorts; they chafe and wear down the fabric)
  • A fitted top that covers your armpits and midriff
  • Layers, since the studio temperature varies

Leave at home

  • All jewelry: rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, and fitness trackers
  • Perfume, scented lotion, or any chemical fragrance
  • Clothing with zippers, hooks, or anything that could snag the fabric

Before you come

  • Trim your nails. Long acrylics can tear the fabric and may not be allowed.
  • Tape any body piercings that could touch the hammock.

We provide mats, blocks, bolsters, and blankets. You’re welcome to bring your own mat. If you sweat a lot, bring a towel or an extra shirt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be flexible or strong?
No. The hammock supports you, so you work at your own level. Flexibility and strength come with practice.

Will the hammock hold me?
Yes. Our equipment is professionally rigged and rated for [X lbs]. [Confirm rating and any weight guidance.]

I’m nervous about being upside down.
That’s very common. Your instructor guides every step, and inversions are always optional. Many students are surprised at how safe they feel once they’re in the fabric.

Will I get dizzy?
Some people feel a little lightheaded at first. Come up slowly and rest whenever you need to. If you tend toward motion sickness, talk to your doctor before class.

Can I come if I’ve never done yoga?
Absolutely. All Levels Aerial Yoga is designed for complete beginners.

How old do I need to be?
Adult classes are for ages 16 and up (younger with instructor permission). Younger kids can join our Kids classes.

What if I need to cancel?
Cancel in the Vagaro app or online at least [X hours] before class to receive a class credit. Late cancellations and no-shows forfeit the class fee.

Can I bring a friend?
Yes, and it’s a great way to try your first class! Each person books their own spot. For groups of [X] or more, ask about a private class.
